Cyanogen Inc., a startup that aimed to outgrow Google's Android OS, on its official blog announced, that they would shut down their operations behind CyanogenMod (CM) by December 31, 2016.
There will be no more updates security updates, no more nightly builds, phones like OnePlus will now have to switch to the Open Source version of the OS, reports Forbes.
In its blog on Friday, Cyanogen stated, "As part of the ongoing consolidation of Cyanogen, all services and Cyanogen-supported nightly builds will be discontinued no later than 12/31/16. The open source project and source code will remain available for anyone who wants to build CyanogenMod personally."
That is, phones like OnePlus One and Lenovo ZUK Z1, that run on Cyanogen OS will not get any more updates and might shift to opens-source CyanogenMod ROM, reports CNET.
Earlier, 20 percent of the workforce at Cyanogen was laid off in July 2016 while a new CEO was also named. The company which once claims to "put a bullet through Google's head" is now putting one in its own project. In an interview with Forbes, Cyanogen CEO Kirt McMaster had said that they wanted to take "control of Android away from Google."
